Manchester United and Manchester City both lost their first leg encounter of the Europa league on Thursday. Both teams are considered to be the favorites of the second best European Competition.
In the First match Sporting Lisbon beat Manchester City by 1-0 at their home ground. The only goal of the match was scored by the Brazilian defender Xandao . Manchester City came close to score several times but some good goalkeeping and their bad luck deny them. City players hit the goal post 3 times during the match. The things went from bad to worse for Manchester City when their captain Vincent Kompany suffered an injury. Man City manager Roberto Mancini was concerned after the match about the situation because this could prove to be a big blow for Manchester City.
In the second match of the night Manchester United lost to Spanish club Athletic Bilbao with the score of 3-2. Red Devils has now lost 2 back to back home games in European competitions. Wayne Rooney gave the lead to United but Bilbao star Fernando Llorente just before the half time. In the second half Bilbao took the full control of the match and started attacking United goals their good work was rewarded when O.D. Marcos score the goal in the 73rd minute of the match and gave them a 2-1 lead. Then the things went from bad to worse when I. Muniain put the ball in the back of the net in the stoppage time and gave Bilbao 3-1 lead. But just after that United won a penalty and Rooney scored the goal from the spot to give United a hope to turn in tie in the return leg.
The intrusting thing is this that both Manchester Clubs are at the top of the Premier League with only two points difference between them.
