Wigan Athletic beat Arsenal by 2-1 at their home ground and showed the world that their win over Manchester United was not a fluke. After tonight’s win Wigan are 4 points clear of the relegation zone. The amazing thing is this that at the start of the year Wigan are one of the favorite teams of be relegated this season but their last 3 wins over Liverpool, Manchester United and today Arsenal gave them a strong hope playing in the Premier League next season. In the last 5 premier league matches Wigan has just lost 1 match that was against Chelsea. Wigan are the first team to beat Manchester United and Arsenal in consecutive matches since Southampton in 2001.
Wigan Athletic put Arsenal on the back foot from the start of the match when they score 2 goals in the first ten minutes and shows Arsenal that they mean business today. After that Arsenal took control of the match and managed to get the more of the ball position. Their good work was rewarded when Thomas Vermaelen reduced the deficit mid way through the first half and gave Arsenal fans a hope of another come from behind victory. In the first half Arsenal had a lot of chances to level the score the some good defending and bad luck denied them the equalizer.
In the second half Wigan came out with a different game plan and started to get hold of the ball. They managed to outplay the Arsenal midfield in the second half of the game , even Arsenal hitman had no answer of the Wigan excellent defending. In the last 15 minutes of the match Arsenal managed to overpower the midfield of the Wigan and started to attack Ali Al-Habsi goal , by some last-minute defending from Wigan and excellent keeping from Ali Al-Habsi denied Arsenal their second goal and gave Wigan a much needed win to keep their hopes of playing in the top fight next season alive. Wigan will now play against Fulham,Newcastle,Blackburn,Wolves in their last 4 premier league matches.
